Industrial engineering is a concept of continuous improvement of the installed or applied system of men, machine, and materials for the welfare of the industry.

An industrial engineer has to work lots of things. In a garment industry, industrial engineer work for developing a new garment procedure by doing machine setup, line balancing, production target calculation and so on. Anyhow, they should have finished the garment production before the date of shipment.

For doing all of these work, they apply science, mathematics, engineering methods and tools, skills, and experience to the complicated system integration and operations. They work for the industries to utilize minimum resources to get maximum profit

The concept of industrial engineering

In simple, Industrial Engineering = Proper use of all elements↑ Cost↓ Production↑ Efficiency↑ Profit↑.

An industrial engineer works all of these and maintains a working sequence:

Product negotiation with garments merchandiser
Analysis of Garments difficulties
Arrange a P.P meeting
Calculate the production target
Setup machine layout
Line setup
Line balancing
Keep daily or weekly production meeting
Collecting production data from the sewing floor
Preparing a production report
Analysis of the production report
Finally, the report submitted to the factory manager

Responsibilities of an Industrial Engineer:
  • Prepare operation breakdown & machine Layout.
  • Prepare buyer & style wise operation breakdown & Layout.
  • Prepare a man-machine report.
  • Buyer & style wise capacity study & line balancing.
  • Train up all the production staff on efficiency.
  • Production monitoring & achieve the line Target.
  • Daily line wise target setup.
  • Wastage control at the production floor.
  • To prepare daily, weekly, monthly production plan (Cutting, Printing, and Sewing)
  • Arrange trims & accessories just in time.
  • Prepared daily Crisis report & SMV calculation.
  • Follow up daily output per production line & achieve the line.
  • Method study & Motion Study.
  • Data collect & efficiency report
  • Prepare skill inventory & grading of the operator
  • Nonproductive time (Lost Time) record.
  • Ensure optimum use of the machine.
  • Machine servicing report follow-up.
  • Monitoring and optimizing the rented machine.
  • Daily production, efficiency, and manpower report.
  • Daily quality statistical report presentation.
  • Monthly production and shipment closing report.
  • Production planning
  • Department and factory inventory
  • Research to improve all department of the factory

There are so many tools and methods are applied by the industrial engineer. The goal of using different tools and method of industrial engineering is to improve the productivity of the industries by optimum utilization of minimum resources of the industries like men, materials, and machines. Most common tools and techniques used by the industrial engineer are:
  • Production planning
  • Production controlling.
  • Inventory controlling.
  • Job evaluation.
  • Facilitates planning.
  • Facilitates material handling.
  • Method analysis.
  • Simulation.
  • Take the ricks assignment.
  • Sequencing and transportation models.
  • Statistical analysis.
  • Product quality control.
  • Decision-making theory.
  • Replacement models.
  • Assembly line balancing.
  • ISO-TQM.etc.
At present industrial engineering is a very essential department in the garment industry. Because an industrial engineer can raise up the profit of the industry by applying different method and technique.
