The Department of Work Studies in the textile factory plays an extremely significant role. The efficiency of production relies on this department. Work-study aims at maximizing manufacturing with the least utilization of time and cost in the industrial engineering department. In order to enhance the efficient use of resources, this Department is based on the systematic review of techniques of carrying out operations.

Objectives of work-study in the garments industry:
  • Scientific and monitored analysis of current techniques for carrying out a job.
  • Simplify the job.
  • Measure mental and physically skilled workers and define performance measurements as a standard.
  • Improve job effectiveness at all levels.
  • Workers, plants, equipment, and other resources are optimally used at a minimum price.
  • Profitability.
  • Improved productivity and improved mood for workers.
  • Enhanced organizational effectiveness.
  • Maintain the right goal.

Work-Study in textile industrial engineering

There are two kinds of technique are applied in work-study:
1. Method Study or Motion Study (The better way to get the job done).
2. Work measurement or Time Study  (It requires time and body movement of a worker to get the work done).

Method Study is a systematic recording and critical assessment of items to improve. There are many ways to achieve this goal-
  • Special machinery use of special methods.
  • Appropriate men and machinery combination.
Time Study is the use of methods to determine a proper time for a skilled employee to perform a job at a certain pace.

The procedure of work-study in the garments industry:

PO or approved sample received from the buyer/merchandiser
Analyzing the new style
Preparing an operation bulletin for the new style
Preparing a machine layout/setup
Starting pilot run
Monitoring the line progress/smoothness
Time study and line balancing for decreasing production time
The individual operation follows up
Find out line-wise efficiency, daily report and reach the production target
Daily lost time analysis or add allowances

1. PO or approved sample receive: Receive PO from the merchandiser and analyzing new style.

2. Find out style difficulties: Find out the difficult operation that should be developed by analyzing.

3. Operation bulletin: Operation bulletin means, how many steps of work or process needs to make this style complete.

4. Set up machine layout: Starting machine set up one after another by following the operation bulletin.

5. Starting pilot run: Starting a pilot run for checking line smoothness and ensuring no bottleneck in the line.

6. Time and motion study: The time study method is intended to assess how long the average employee takes to complete a job normally. Motion studies improve manufacturing techniques by measuring the distance you need to travel to work in a given period of time and how much you do it. Time and motion studies jointly are used for logical and reasonable outcomes and the implementation of fresh working practices is best practiced.

7. Find out efficiency: Find out the implementing work-study (method study, Time and motion study) line-wise efficiency to ensure that this is the best way to do this new style production process.

The production unit can make efficient use of resources by performing work studies. These specifications will be fulfilled by a job which includes method studies and work measurement. Through method studies, one can determine the most efficient way of carrying out the work, the most logical layout for factory plants, and an unbroken flux of material throughout the organization. Work measurements instead determine the time needed for a completed procedure at the specified level of efficiency in an operating location for the conventional technique.
