Merchandising job is one of the top choice jobs for a textile engineering student. Everybody wants to be a merchandiser because of its facilities and smart salary. Merchandisers are the top employee in the industry and the buying house. Merchandising department consider as the heart of the garments industry as they collect order and help to run the industry the whole year.
Today I discussed 25 most frequently asked question that asked in a merchandising job interview.
1. What is merchandising?
Answer: Merchandise means products and goods are bought and sold to the customer. The person who does this work calls a merchandiser.
2. What do you know about merchandising?
Answer: According to the textile business, Merchandising means to receive an order from the buyer, sourcing all required raw materials, execute the order from sample to final product, confirm order shipment to the buyer, and collect the price of the product from the buyer.
3. Why do you want to be a merchandiser?
Answer: First of all merchandising is my dream job after starting my study in textile engineering and I decide to be a merchandiser. Secondly, Merchandising is the smartest job in the textile sector and here all the smart and intelligent people work with each other. However, there is so much pressure and challenges in the merchandising job but I like to take challenges and work in under pressure that is why I want to start my career in the merchandising department. 4. Tell us about your internship experience in merchandising.
Answer: During my internship period, I got an opportunity to learn about merchandising. From there I took some experience about trim card preparation and sample production to follow up. (Try yourself)
5. What is the trim card?
Answer: A trim card is a document used to show recommended or approved trims by attaching all garment trims and accessories on the trim card. Quality inspector used to follow the trim card as a guide for identifying the right trims.
6. What is the allowance?
Answer: In the garments manufacturing process, need to add some extra measurement (1 to 3 cm) with the total measurement of the fabric. It calls allowance.
7. What is PO sheet?
Answer: PO sheet instead as Purchase order sheet. PO is a document where everything is described such as types of fabric, yarn, trim and accessories, quantity, delivery time etc.
8. Why buyer provide PO sheet?
Answer: A buyer provide a PO sheet to the manufacturer that the manufacturer produces the garments according to their instruction and don’t make any mistake in the production process.
9. What is lead-time?
Answer: Lead-time is the time between the submissions in order to the delivery date. Generally, lead-time is 90-120 days.
10. What is L/C?
Answer: L/C instead of the letter of credit. It is provided by the buyer to the manufacturer by the bank. Here all the term and conditions are mention of the export order.
11. Why is L/C require?
Answer: A letter of credit - sometimes known as 'documentary credit' - is a guarantee from a bank that a particular seller will receive a payment due from a particular buyer for the particular item of goods. That’s why an L/C is required for export-import business.
Answer: Costing is the process of calculating or estimating the total cost of producing a garment, including all the cost such as raw materials, labor, and transportation as well as the general expenses of the operating the business in the garments.
13. What is base fabric?
Answer: Base fabric also calls basic fabric. A basic fabric is an undyed or grey fabric just produce from knitting and weaving process. Which will be dyed any buyer recommended color.
14. What is the grain line?
Answer: In the pattern pieces, we see a line, which draws according to the fabric length. It calls a grain line.
15. What is crease?
Answer: Crease is a kind of folding in the cloth.
16. What is garment consumption?
Answer: Fabric consumption is defined as the average meter(s) (or Kgs for knits) of fabric required to make the garment.
17. What is the approved sample?
Answer: When a sample is made, according to follow all the required condition, that buyer provided and buyer reply that is ok then it calls the approved sample.
18. What is size sample?
Answer: Size samples are the sample that the manufacturer sends to the buyer before the bulk production to ensure all size is perfect according to the measurement.
19. What is Fit sample?
Answer: The Fit sample is made and sends to confirm the fit of the garment on live models or on a dummy and for approval of construction details.
20. What is an offshore assembly?
Answer: Offshore assembly defined that purchase the fabric and cut it one place but gives it to the other country for sewing.
21. What is the final inspection?
Answer: After completing garments production inspection is done to check the quality of the garments by the third-party company.
22. Why does final inspection require?
Answer: When an order is completed and the manufacturer informs the buyer. Then buyer recommended arranging an inspection process to confirm that the product is full defect free and quality full.
23. What is the apparel industry?
Answer: The number of manufacturers that are involved in the manufacturing of clothing such as garments, fabric, technical textiles, sweater industry is known as the apparel industry.
24. What is the difference between garments and apparel?
Answer: In general, apparel and garment are interchangeable. However, there are some basic differences in apparel and garment. Garment refers to a single piece of clothing. Apparel refers to a collection of clothing means it refers to more than one piece.
25. Where do you want to see yourself after five years?
Answer: By working hard and experience, I want to see myself in the top position of the merchandising department.
