SMV (Standard Minute Value) Calculation | how to calculate SMV by the best method with mathematical problem solution

Introduction: The abbreviation of "SMV" is "Standard Minute Value" which means all particular jobs must be done over a certain period of time by a qualified worker. Nobody can take unlimited time to do a specific job, so the calculated time value of a certain job is basically known as SMV or Standard Minute Value.

SMV is essentially a measurement task of work content. All operations are measured in the clothing sector until a full body is prepared to be shipped.

SMV Calculation
The value of a TMU or time measurement unit is only the SMV or standard minute value of an operation. No other value with this value will be added or included. The value of operation from start to finish implies pick-up, operation, and disposal is merely unique. In the clothing sector, parts pairing, machine alignment, and sewing are fundamental operations. The TMU is an acceptable standard compared to the SMV for a particular operation.

Now we are going to calculate SMV through time study method.

SMV calculation through time study method:

Step - 1: At the beginning of the SMV calculation, you should select an operation like shoulder joining or side seam joining for a basic T-Shirt and stands beside the operator with a stopwatch.

Step - 2: Now starting note of full cycle time for the specific operation. Here, a cycle time means to start with picking the part of the garment, sewing the part of garments and dispose of the garments part before picking other same parts of garments. Do this for 5 consecutive times to avoid abnormal time in any cycle. Now calculate all 5 cycle time and divide it by 5 for getting the average cycle time for the specific operation.

Step - 3: To get SMV we need basic time. But Basic time = Cycle time × Performance rating. So we need to rate the operator by monitoring his movement and working speed. Here, we rate the operator by comparing the standard time required for the operation. Performance rating = (Observed Rating * Standard rating) / Standard rating.

Step - 4: Now finally we will get the SMV for the operation by following this formula ;
Standard Minute Value = (Basic time + Allowance). Here, Allowance = Bundle allowances + machine and personal allowances. Adding bundle allowances (10%) and machine and personal allowances (20%) to basic time.

Example of the SMV calculation:

Q. Suppose, an industrial engineer find cycle time is 0.70, the performance rating of an operator is 75% for a basic T-shirt shoulder joining operation. Find the SMV for that operation.

Solution:

We know,

SMV = Basic time + Allowance
= ( Cycle time × Rating) + (Bundle allowances + machine and personal allowances)
          = (0.70 × 0.75) + (Bundle allowances + machine and personal allowances)
          = 0.525 + ( 0.525 × 10%)+ (0.525 × 20%)
          = 0.525 + 0.0525 + 0.105
          = 0.68

Answer: The SMV for the shoulder join operation is 0.68 minute.

SMV or Standard minute value is an important term for an industrial engineer. So it should be calculated very carefully. Production of a line depends on SMV or Standard minute.
